ChatGPT Agent is a tool which can take a task, break it into steps, and complete work that would normally take a human many hours, or days.
It can browse websites, do extensive research, make documents, and generate images; ChatGPT Agent is computer helper that can actually follow through, rather than just answer a question.
Let’s ask Chat GPT Agent to write a prompt for itself, and we’ll use the Agent mode to turn into a reality.
ChatGPT Agent Prompts Itself
When ChatGPT Agent was allowed to prompt itself, the first goal it came up with was a bit too huge to achieve:
“Create a strategy for universal access to clean drinking water.”
Lofty and noble, but the Agent wouldn’t be able to actually turn that clean-water strategy into a real-world result, so I guided it toward something more concrete.
Step 1: Researching our Idea
This second time, the ChatGPT Agent wrote a prompt that suggested building a global spreadsheet of free and open mental health resources.
I told the Agent to proceed with its idea, and it began compiling the following country-by-country data:
helplines, chat services, peer groups, languages offered, and contact details.
The Agent ran for 25 minutes, then produced its first document, which was a spreadsheet of 65 unique resources for 10 different countries.
I asked it to keep going and add more countries; after several agent calls, it had built a total of seven spreadsheets.
I gave those 7 spreadsheets to another ChatGPT Agent and told it to combine everything into one file.
The result was a large CSV, with over 500 entries across the world.
We’ve got our raw data, but now we need a way to display it to the world, and that means we’re going to make a 1-page website.
Step 2: Making a Website
To start making our website, I asked another ChatGPT Agent to research best practices for international-accessible web design.
It produced a guide and even drafted a starter HTML file, so I could see how the website might look.
Then, I cross-checked with another Ai, Claude Opus 4.1, to get a second perspective on the HTML and style of our website.
By the end of the loop, I had a working site: www.FreeMentalHealth.info
All of this happened in less than a day, and a total of about 20 Agent calls.
ChatGPT Agent wrote the code, built the menu, and combined the data into a public resource, using the best-practices we developed together.
Step 3: There’s No Step 3
This is the real strength of a ChatGPT Agent: It can carry out extended projects, check its own progress, and respond to feedback, and it doesn’t need a lot of hand-holding.
Even better, if you have the right words to use—like knowing to ask for a “hamburger menu” for a mobile version of a website—ChatGPT Agent can build things you could never finish on your own, in the same time.
A ChatGPT Agent helps you achieve results outside your skill level.
Set the ChatGPT Agent to work, then live your life, and when you come back, review the Agents’ results, and provide the finishing 10% with your own creativity and insight.

By the end of this project, our ChatGPT Agent had done the following things:
