How to Create a Custom Knowledge Base Poe Ai Bot

Today we’ll review how you can create your very own AI assistant using Poe – and the best part – It only takes about 5 minutes.

What You’ll Need:

• A Poe Ai account
• Your knowledge-base content (in text format)
• A clear idea of your bot’s purpose

If you have everything you need, then let’s get started making Poe bot with it’s own custom knowledge base.

1. Create Your Bot in Poe

Head over to Poe and click the “Create Bot” button.

The “Create Bot” button is located next to the “Explore” button, located in the top-left of the Poe window.

2. Basic Bot Setup

It will ask you what kind of bot you want to create, and for our purposes, we’ll select a bot type called “Prompt Bot”, which is a bot that will type out responses to our initial prompts.

Other bot types can be created, too,  such as “Image Generation” and ‘Video Generation” bots.

• Choose “Prompt Bot” as your bot type
• Add a profile picture (Make it using Poe Ai Image Generators , like Flux )
• Give your bot a unique name
• Select “Claude 3 Haiku” as your base model (it’s perfect for starting out)

3. Creating Your Bot’s Personality

This is where things get interesting in your custom knowledge base Poe Ai bot creation! Your bot needs clear instructions on how to behave. For example:

• Define its purpose clearly
• Specify how it should interact
• Set the tone and style
• Explain how it should use the knowledge base.

Specifically, when you’re writing your bot’s prompt, you’ll want to include a sentence that says exactly how and when the bot should utilize your knowledge-base documents.

Add a sentence to your prompt which has a placeholder of two quotes, such as ”  ”  .

Later, we’ll replace the empty space between those quotes with the actual file name of our knowledge-base document.

4. Adding Your Knowledge Base

Here’s where the magic happens!

• Click “Add Knowledge Source”
• Upload your text file(s) or type directly
• Wait for Poe to process the information
• Reference your knowledge base in the prompt

The easiest way to get your Poe Ai bot to reference your knowledge-base documents is to specifically add the text-document’s file name into your bot’s prompt.

Copy the file-name of your knowledge-source document, and paste it into the ”  ” quotes that are in the bot’s prompt. This will connect the bot’s prompt with the specific information that’s located in the knowledge base.

• Use simple and understandable file names for your knowledge base’s files.
• You can add multiple files to expand your bot’s knowledge
• Test your bot thoroughly before making it public
• You can the knowledge base documents as needed, and simply update the prompt to reflect any adjustments to file names.
