Creating a Poe AI chat bot is a fun, straightforward process that anyone can do with a bit of guidance.
In this article, we’ll break down the steps for making your own chat bot.
I’ll make a chat bot that sounds like ‘myself’, but you can make a chat bot in Poe Ai that basically sounds like anyone, or acts in nearly any way you want.
Here’s 8 Steps for Building a Poe AI Chat Bot
Step 1: Access the Poe AI Chat Platform
First, head over to the Poe AI chat website and sign up for an account, if you haven’t already.
Once you’re logged-in to your Poe account, find-and-click the “Create Bot” option.
Step 2: Choose Your Bot Type
Poe AI chat bots allow you to make various bot types, and for our purposes, we’re going with a “prompt bot”.
A ‘prompt bot’ means we’re making an AI assistant that will generate text, based on nearly any request (prompt) that we give it. How cool is that?
Step 3: Name Your Poe AI Chat Bot
When you name your bot, choose a name to reflect the bot’s purpose.
In this article, we’re creating a helper bot, called “CT Helper Bot” (CT for Carleton Torpin, my name).
Step 4: Select Your Bot’s Ai Model
Next, you’ll choose the AI large-language model that will power your Poe AI Chat bot.
If you have the resources of a paid Poe account, try the Claude 3.5 Sonnet 200k model for the ideal amount of “Ai oomph”.
Many Poe Ai models can work great for your chat bot tool; if you’re on a free Poe account, try a low-computational-cost ai, such as ‘GPT-4o-Mini’ or ‘Claude-3-Haiku’, or whatever Poe suggests to you.
Step 5: Define Your Chat Bot’s Purpose
This is where you tell your Poe AI chat bot what you want it to do.
We’re creating a writing assistant chat bot, so we’ll write this:
“You are a helpful writing assistant for the author of CarletonTorpin.com. You interpret and improve articles written by Carleton Torpin and help integrate a focus keyword into each article output to improve SEO.”
Pro tip: The more detailed your instructions, the better your Poe AI Chat bot can perform.
Step 6: Add Knowledge Sources (Optional)
Want to give your Poe AI chat bot some extra smarts? Create a custom knowledge source for it your bot!
Open a new chat with Claude within Poe, and ask it for help creating a document to guide your bot’s writing style.
This document can be created by feeding the Ai a series of articles written by the person (or organization) that the bot is supposed to sound like.
In the case of our example, I copied the text of four articles from my own website, and I pasted them to Claude 3.5 Sonnet 200k, and asked it to make a summary of how I like to write.
The resulting document “CarletonTorpinSoundsLike.txt” is fed to the CT-Helper Ai chat bot, into it’s ‘Knowledge Base’ area.
Step 7: Configure Privacy Settings
Decide whether you want your Poe AI chat bot to be publicly accessible or keep it private.
You can always change this setting later, but ‘Private’ is a good place to set it for now.
Step 8: Create and Test Your Bot
Hit that “Create Bot” button and, nearly instantly, your very own Poe AI Chat bot is created and ready to use.
Your next step is to start chatting with it, and see how well it follows your instructions.
If it seems a bit off, you can go back and make some adjustments to your bot’s prompt, in order to steer it toward behavior you’d like to see from it.
Things I learned while creating Poe AI Chat bots:
- Longer Prompts lead to more specific bot behavior
- Experimenting with Different AI Models can yield dramatically-different results
- Adding custom Knowledge Sources significantly enhances your chat bot’s capabilities
- Regular Testing and Refinement are key to creating a great Poe Ai Chat bot
That’s it; you’ve got the basics of creating your own Poe Ai chat bot.
Poe AI chat bots can do nearly anything that you can imagine, so be sure to experiment, learn, and have fun with your Ai bot creation.

I wrote this article using the same Poe Ai chat bot that we made, in the article.
Here’s the conversation link I had with my CT-Helper bot, after I fed it the transcript to the YouTube video link I included at the top of the article.

The transcript of 30 minutes of spoken audio would have been otherwise nearly impossible for other chat bots to deal with, which is another reason I like using Claude 3.5 Sonnet 200K, since it’s large context-window (200,000 tokens, total) allows to work with large amounts of copy-pasted text (such as the transcript of youtube’s text, pasted into our CT-Helper chat bot)
